Tap dance is a dance form which originated in the United States in the 19th century. Nowadays it has become quite popular among people. In tap dance, the dancers wear shoes which have metal plates attached to them. The plates click against the dance floor creating a tapping sound when the dancers move. Tappers can create a variety of percussive rhythms with their feet by tapping, sliding, and clicking the metal plates. They can either perform alone or with musical accompaniment.
Tap dancing has various roots of origin. Several cultures have dance traditions which are similar to tap dancing. Clogging, Flamenco, etc all use different versions of tap dancing. Tappers usually use a lot of unexpected movements and create lively rhythms. In classic tap, the dancer's whole body moves along with the feet, in very showy, stylized movements. Hoofers, on the other hand, focus on the movements of their feet, keeping their upper bodies still.
Those who are interested in Tap dancing can join tap dance schools or can learn from any private instructor.
