In a display of how art doesn't always imitate life, it sometimes encourages it, dance classes are springing up all over the United States.

The popularity of shows like 'Dancing With The Stars' is not just restricted to the more mature audience. The biggest explosion of classes are with the 10-18 year olds.

One such class in Eugene, Oregon is focused on Ballroom dancing and the class had to be expanded to cope with the rush of registrations.

"It's not as intimidating as ballet, and it's applicable to social dancing," she said. "It's also welcoming to all kinds of personalities and body shapes."
For Anthony Joslin-Lemire, 15, learning to dance has been a way to meet people after moving here from Iowa two years ago. "It's helped me make friends," he said.

Ballroom dancing is a formal, social dancing which is done between partners. One of the partner leads and the other follows the steps. Ballroom dancing derives its name from the word ball which comes from the Latin word 'ballare' meaning 'to dance'. Ballroom dancing originated in England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in which these dances were performed mainly by the upper and elite classes. Later it also became a part of the working and middle classes. Ballroom dancing is generally very elegant and graceful. Ballroom dance can be classified into two broad styles:
• International Style
• American Style
The International style includes dance forms namely: Slow Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive.
The American style includes: Foxtrot, Cha Cha, East Coast Swing, Mambo and Bolero.
Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Rumba are common in both the styles.
Nowadays increasing number of people are taking ballroom dancing lessons to learn this art form.

Nowadays the concept of fusion in some of the contemporary schools of dance is much in vogue. It is an attempt to synthesize various styles taking advantage of the best in each. Pioneering artists have attempted to bring a renaissance in the classical dance forms by breaking the barriers of the traditional concept in dance. The trend has gained strength due to the migration of artistes across the World where they have opportunities for interaction with those of other cultures. They are greatly appreciated by the audience which perhaps wants something new away from the beaten track. This also leads to the best possible expression of your inner self through the most graceful movements and postures.
